At the conclusion of this continuing education lesson, the pharmacist will be able to:
- Describe the epidemiology of prescription and over-the-counter medication use in the elderly.
- Summarize age-related changes in physiology that alter the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of potentially-toxic medications.
- Cite examples of how pharmacists can limit polypharmacy and drug toxicity in the elderly.
- Discuss therapeutic alternatives for common geriatric disease states that are better-tolerated in the elderly.
At the conclusion of this continuing education lesson, the pharmacy technician will be able to:
- Describe 2 key issues with prescription and over-the-counter medication use in the elderly.
- Name 2 age-related changes that alter how medications work in the elderly patient.
- Cite examples of how pharmacists can limit polypharmcy and drug toxicity in the elderly.
- Describe why a therapeutic alternative might be better handled in the elderly.
