At the conclusion of this continuing education lesson, the pharmacist will be able to:

  1. Discuss the normal process of erythropoiesis.
  2. Outline the pathological processes associated with anemia of chronic disease.
  3. Identify how anemia impacts the cardiovascular system.
  4. Discuss information on emerging data that links anemia to cardiovascular disease.
  5. Discuss both historical and current approaches to anemia management with a direct link to cardiovascular disease.
  6. Identify the treatment measures employed in the management of anemia of chronic disease and discuss their relevant pharmacologic and therapeutic principles for use in this patient population.
  7. Outline the benefits and limitations of the currently available treatment options for anemia.
  8. Outline the overall impact of anemia management on reducing cardiovascular disease risk.
