Course Overview:
Approxiamtely 24 million Americans have diabetes with 90-95 percent having Type 2 and 5-10 percent with Type 1. This deadly and debilitating disease can be managed through lifestyle modifications and drug therapy, but it has significant impact on patient quality of life and longevity when not adequately controlled. This session will utilized an interactive, patient cased-based approach to discuss the differences and relationships of Type 1 diabetes (T1DM), Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA), and Celiac disease; as well as review the current pharmacological and non-pharmacoligcal treatment modalities available to manage these diseases.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this continuing education lesson, the pharmacist will be able to:

  • Discuss the pathhophysiology of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM), Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA), and Celiac disease.
  • Compare and contrast LADA and T1DM.
  • Describe the relationship between Celiac disease and T1DM.
  • List treatment options for patients with T1DM, LADA, and Celiac disease.
