Course Overview:
Vaccine development and delivery research is an ongoing endeavor. New strategies are being investigated for the potential to accelerate vaccine production and expand the use of available vaccine in the event of a pandemic. Needle-free methods for vaccine delivery that increase the safety and acceptability of vaccine administration are also being explored. And, although many diseases and conditions have been effectively controlled through vaccine use, many potential vaccine targets remain under investigation. In this session, we will review recent scientific advances that may potentially translate into future public health benefits.
Learning Objectives:
After attending this session, the pharmacist will be able to:
- Explain investigational strategies to expand and accelerate the production of vaccines.
- Discuss the potential benefits and drawbacks of vaccine production methods that do not rely on chicken eggs.
- Describe at least two novel vaccine delivery methods.
- Describe progress toward controlling novel conditions with vaccines, including Alzheimer’s disease, HIV, traveler’s diarrhea, ragweed allergy, and nicotine dependence.
