Emergency Preparedness and the Role of Immunizing Pharmacists
Program Overview:
When there is a disaster or an emergency, pharmacists respond with a desire to help their communities and serve the public good. Pharmacists will be able to provide the greatest assistance during an emergency if they are prepared and trained in advance. Furthermore, proper planning can substantially reduce the impact of a pandemic or other emergency. Pharmacists’ involvement in pandemic preparedness activities will help ensure that plans for making vaccines and other medications available to appropriate patients are implemented in a timely manner. Pharmacists can also serve in other vital roles, such as acting as reliable sources of information, and overseeing distribution of resources. In this session, we will examine lessons learned from previous emergencies, and use a case-based interactive approach to explore how pharmacists can best prepare to serve the public during a pandemic or other emergency.
Learning Objectives:
After attending this session, the pharmacist will be able to:
- Explain the importance of preparedness efforts prior to an emergency or pandemic.
- List benefits that pharmacists have provided to their communities during prior emergencies.
- Explain the importance of pharmacist-provided immunizations during emergencies.
- Describe a plan for becoming involved with public health departments’ preparedness efforts.
