Diabetes Impact: The 2 Minute Consult
Stephen Freed, RPh, Diabetes Educator Publisher of DiabetesinControl.com Newsletter
Program Overview:
Diabetes is growing at epidemic proportions; in fact the ADA and CDC both agree that 1 in 3 people born in the US after 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime. The pharmacist is in the best position as a medical professional to intervene with these patients.
Our program helps the pharmacist learn how to impact these patients every time they come into the pharmacy. We show the pharmacist how to interact with the patients and help them to understand the importance of managing their diabetes.
Pharmacist spend more time learning about medications and their effects on patients than any other professional but are often left out of the pharmacologic decision making process. We give valuable advice on how the pharmacist can work with medical professionals in the community to help manage patients, influence drug decisions and become part of the patient's medical team.
Education Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this program, you will be able to explain:
- Explain the reasons for the increase in diabetes diagnosis
- Explain how diabetes develops and the risk factors of pre-diabetes.
- Understand the physiology of glucose homeostasis.
- Understand the effects of food and exercise, and goals for each.
- Describe the benefits of glucose monitoring, A1c testing and CGMS, and how to set goals for each.
- Understand how medications work and current theories for diabetes care.
- Understand how to make a difference every time a patient walks into your store.
- Understand how to work with physicians and other medical professionals to build a diabetes practice.
