Course Overview

The understanding and management of chronic pain has improved tremendously in recent years. Join RxSchool for an informative and challenging discussion about both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic methods of managing chronic pain. The course will cover the nature of chronic pain, pathophysiology, psychology as well as methods to help your patients manage their pain more effectively.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this continuing education lesson, the pharmacist will be able to:
  • Describe the epidemiology and socioeconomic impact of chronic pain in the United States.
  • Discuss the use of non-pharmacologic interventions for chronic pain, such as behavioral therapy, physical and occupational therapy.
  • Describe how pharmacists can assess pain and collaborate with other health providers to improve pain management. 
  • Identify the basic components of an effective “pain contract” used by physicians when prescribing narcotics.
  • Describe the role of simple analgesics, opiates, anticonvulsants, antidepressants, topical agents and transdermal therapy for chronic pain.
At the conclusion of this continuing education lesson, the pharmacy technician will be able to:
  • Name three non-pharmacologic interventions that are sometimes used in the management for chronic pain.
  • Identify the common and/or serious side effects on NSAIDs and opiate analgesics.
  • Cite several examples topical and transdermal analgesics used for chronic pain.
  • Identify the basic components of an effective “pain contract” used by physicians when prescribing narcotics.
