Since use of these supplements has increased in recent years, current standards, and risk and benefit knowledge is essential to the practicing pharmacist. At the conclusion of this continuing education lesson, the pharmacist will be able to:
- Discuss the FDA’s and manufacturers’ responsibilities as outlined in the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994.
- Describe the functions and indications, safety, and drug interactions for Vitamin A -carotenoids, B vitamins, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin E.
- Describe the functions and indications, safety, and drug interactions for the minerals: calcium, selenium, magnesium, and zinc.
- List the dosing regimens for disease states or for the prevention of health conditions.
- Discuss guidelines for the use of the internet by consumers to obtain information on vitamins and minerals and beneficial web sites available to the public and pharmacists.
At the conclusion of this continuing education lesson, the pharmacy technician will be able to:
- Discuss the key responsibilities of the FDA in regulating supplements.
- Describe the primary functions of Vitamin A -carotenoids, B vitamins, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin E.
- Describe the primary function for the minerals: calcium, selenium, magnesium, and zinc.
- Name one question about vitamins that you will refer to a pharmacist.
