Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this continuing education lesson, the pharmacist will be able to:

  1. Describe the epidemiology, clinical features, pathophysiology, and virology of the common cold.
  2. Summarize the evidence examining prophylaxis of the common cold, using supplements such as Vitamin C, zinc preparations and Echinaceas.
  3. Discuss the role of drugs for symptomatic relief of colds, including decongestants, antihistamines, ipratropium, analgesics and antitussives.
  4. Discuss how pharmacists should promote methods of avoiding colds, such as recommending strict hand washing, and discouraging indiscriminate use of antibiotics.
  5. Cite examples of important pharmacist-to-patient counseling points regarding the use of supplemental agents for cold prevention and treatment.
