Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this continuing education lesson, the pharmacist will be able to:
- Describe the epidemiology, clinical features, pathophysiology, and virology of the common cold.
- Summarize the evidence examining prophylaxis of the common cold, using supplements such as Vitamin C, zinc preparations and Echinaceas.
- Discuss the role of drugs for symptomatic relief of colds, including decongestants, antihistamines, ipratropium, analgesics and antitussives.
- Discuss how pharmacists should promote methods of avoiding colds, such as recommending strict hand washing, and discouraging indiscriminate use of antibiotics.
- Cite examples of important pharmacist-to-patient counseling points regarding the use of supplemental agents for cold prevention and treatment.
