Obesity: Overview of Prescription and OTC Diet Aids

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this continuing education lesson, the pharmacist will be able to:

1. Describe the epidemiology, socioeconomic impact, and pathogenesis of obesity and obesity-related disorders.
2. Summarize the efficacy of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapy for obesity, including use of dietary supplements for weight loss.
3. Discuss safety concerns and drug interactions encountered with the use of prescription and OTC diet aids.
4. Demonstrate how a pharmacist can provide patient education and clinical monitoring, in the management of obesity.
