 Kentucky HIV Infection and AIDS: An Overview

Course Overview:

The purpose of this course is to provide an overview of HIV and AIDS, the current state of the epidemic, and how specific state reporting requirements may be implemented. This course meets the Kentucky nursing state requirement for HIV education for pharmacists and the other disciplines listed below under "Target Audience."

Learning Objectives:
At the end of the program, the pharmacist should be able to:
  • Identify the difference between HIV and AIDS.
  • Describe how HIV is transmitted and symptoms of HIV.
  • Define how HIV is diagnosed.
  • Define HAART.
  • Identify the key side effects associated with HAART medications.
  • Describe Kentucky requirements for HIV education for professionals.
  • Identify Kentucky resources for HIV information and support, and requirements for physicians, health facilities or licensed laboratories to report a positive HIV test or AIDS diagnosis.

Karen Siroky, RN, MSN
Course coordinator of this continuing nursing education course. Karen is the Director of Education for RN.com. Karen received her B.S.N. from the University of Arizona and her MSN from San Diego State University. Her nursing experience includes ICU, transplant coordination, recruitment, quality improvement, information, and education. She has previously published articles on Quality Improvement and Cardiac Transplantation.

Robin Varela, RN, BSN
Course coordinator of this continuing nursing education course. Robin Varela has over 20 years experience in critical care and emergency department nursing. During her years as a staff nurse and nurse preceptor she has been certified as CCRN, TNCC, BLS, ACLS, ACLS Instructor, PALS and MICN. Robin has worked for American Mobile Healthcare as a Clinical Services Clinical Liaison RN and works per diem as a critical care transport nurse. 

Nadine Salmon, RN, BSN
Education Support Specialist for RN.com is a South African trained RN with work experience in three countries. She is also trained as a midwife, with a background in Labor & Delivery & Postpartum nursing. Nadine is a Board Certified Lactation Consultant. She has also worked in Medical Surgical Nursing and Home Health.
