2009 Workplace Safety and Patient Care Standards

Program Overview

This self-study course encourages healthcare professionals to take an active role in maintaining workplace safety and patient care standards that are essential to meet the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), The Joint Commission (TJC), and Healthcare Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requirements. The course provides up-to-date information that is constructed to serve as a quick reference and strives to accommodate the incorporation of new information as it becomes available. The content reflects current national regulatory agency recommendations and requirements. It does not address state-specific regulations or replace established facility-specific policies and procedures (P&Ps) or the use of sound clinical judgment. By completing this course and submitting the 2009 Workplace Safety & Patient Care Standards post test, the professional agrees to comply with all applicable confidentiality and security laws and requirements, including but not limited to HIPAA and its regulations and including:
  1. Use and disclose personal health information (PHI) or electronic personal health information (EPHI) only as required or permitted by law and in accordance with the facility's policies and procedures.
  2. Use all appropriate safeguards to prevent the unauthorized use or disclosure of PHI and EPHI.
  3. Immediately report any inappropriate use or disclosure of PHI or EPHI or any security incident of which the professional becomes aware by notifying the professional's immediate supervisor.
  4. Use reasonable efforts to mitigate any harmful effect.

Objectives:

After completing the course, the healthcare professional will be able to (Pharmacists):

  1. Describe professional issues for pharmacy professionals including key elements necessary to maintain patient confidentiality and privacy.
  2. Identify the standards necessary to maintain a safe work environment.
  3. Describe strategies for maintaining personal safety in the workplace.
  4. Identify critical regulatory standards that impact pharmacy practice.
  5. Describe current infection control guidelines that may impact pharmacy professionals.
  6. Identify practices for pharmacy professionals that impact safe preparation and delivery of medications.

After completing the course, the healthcare professional will be able to (Pharmacy Technicians):
  1. Describe professional issues for pharmacy professionals including key elements necessary to maintain patient confidentiality and privacy.
  2. Identify the standards necessary to maintain a safe work environment.
  3. Describe strategies for maintaining personal safety in the workplace.
