 Medicare Modernization: Impact on Community Retail Pharmacy

Program Description

Starting in 2006, Medicare beneficiaries will be able to voluntarily enroll in a new Medicare Part D prescription drug program.This session will provide details on how the program will be structured and operated, and provisions relating to pharmacy participation in the new program.These include requirements relating to access to pharmacies, insurance risk, mail order, pre-emption of state laws, formulary coverage of drugs, and structure and collection of prescription co-pays.

John Coster, RPh, PhD is Vice President of Policy and Programs with NACDS. He is responsible for policy issues relating to federal health care programs, such as Medicare and Medicaid, and federal regulatory issues, such as the FDA.He is a 1984 graduate of St. John's University College of Pharmacy in New York and received his Masters and PhD in Health Policy from the University of Maryland.

  2. Identify specific provisions of the program that will affect Medicare beneficiaries, Medicaid recipients and pharmacy practice.
  3. Identify the opportunities and threats to pharmacy from the new Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage prescription drug benefit program, including the new medication therapy management program.
