Program Goal
The goal of this module is to educate healthcare providers about herbal/supplemental therapy to promote the safe and appropriate use of over-the-counter products such as horse chestnut.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to:
- Apply concepts of evidence-based research methodology to herb/supplement scientific literature, utilizing validated, reproducible grading scales.
- Identify efficacy and safety issues surrounding OTC supplements, including: dosing, toxicology, mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.
- Explain in terms relevant to a patient the significant adverse effects, interactions, pregnancy and lactation data for horse chestnut.
- Describe the folkloric precedent, historic and clinical use of horse chestnut.
Target Audience
Pharmacists, physicians, and pharmacy technicians.
Faculty
Natasha Tiffany, MD Dr. Tiffany is a board-certified internist who has received numerous honors and awards. She is a fellow in hematology and medical oncology (2001-2004) at the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Oregon. She has experience working for Salem Hospital, OHSU Bone Marrow Transplant Service, Kaiser Sunnyside Hospital and many other institutions as a part-time physician. She is an editor and author for the Natural Standard Corporation, an online evidence-based decision support tool for patients and clinicians in integrative medicine.
Heather Boon, B.Sc.Phm, PhD Dr. Boon is and Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Administration at the University of Toronto. She is also a research associate for the Michener Institute for Applied Health Sciences in Toronto. She has worked as a coordinator for the Academic Research and Complementary/Alternative Medicine at the Michener Institute for Applied Health Sciences. Dr. Boon is a post-doctorate fellow of the Centre for Studies in Family Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Western Ontario.
