Pharmaceutical Care: Whats the cost?

Presented by: Marianne McCollum, PhD, RPh, BCPS

Marianne McCollum, PhD, RPh, BCPS, is an Assistant Professor in the School of Pharmacy, University of Colorado Denver.  Dr. McCollum received her BS Pharm in 1989 from the University of Colorado, and her PhD in Pharmaceutical Outcomes Research with emphasis in Pharmacoeconomics in 1999, also from the University of Colorado.  She received a Pre-Doctoral Fellowship in 1998 from the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education in support of her graduate studies.  Prior to her graduate work, Dr. McCollum practiced pharmacy for 10 years at the Denver VA Medical Center, serving as manager of the inpatient pharmacy for five years.  In 2000, Dr. McCollum joined the faculty of the University of Colorado School of Pharmacy, where she teaches health economics in the Doctor of Pharmacy program and Director of Graduate Studies in Pharmaceutical Outcomes Research.  Dr. McCollum is a member of Phi Lambda Sigma and the Rho Chi Society; she became a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist in 1995, and was re-certified in 2002.  Her current research focuses on clinical, economic, and humanistic outcomes for patients with diabetes.  Dr. McCollum received the ACCP Health Outcomes Investigator Development Research Award in 2004, and the ACCP Career Development Research Award in 2005 in support of her research investigating associations between diabetes and comorbid depression.

 

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this program, the participant will be able to:

  1. Describe trends in health care utilization and expenditures.
  2. Discuss factors that affect demand for health care services.
  3. Describe the role of technology assessment in controlling health care utilization.
  4. Compare and contrast techniques available for assessing costs and consequences of health care interventions.
