Learning Objectives:

 At the completion of this program, the participant will be able to:
  1. Outline the multifactorial impact of chronic pain.
  2. Describe the differences between acute, acute breakthrough and chronic pain and their implications for the patient as well as the treatment regimen.
  3. Describe the patient characteristics and therapeutic modalities for acute breakthrough and chronic-nonmealignant pain.
  4. Describe the pharmacological and clinical characteristics of both opiod and non-opiod analgesics.
  5. Outline the indications for polypharmacy in chronic pain management.
  6. Describe the basic principles of polypharmacy for pain-related co-morbidities.
  7. Explain the principles related to the individualization of a therapeutic chronic pain management regimen.
