Bowel Preparations: Helping Patients Achieve Optimal Colon Preparation

Presented by Jane Winston, M.D., C.M.D., F.A.A.F.P.

Dr. Jane Winston is a family physician and geriatrician based in Sun City West, AZ. She’s a graduate of the University of North Dakota School Of Medicine. Dr. Winston is board certified in Family Medicine, with a Certificate of Added Qualification in Geriatrics. She’s a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice and a Certified Medical Director. She’s a member of the American Medical Association, The American Academy of Family Practice, the American Medical Director’s Association, and the Arizona Academy of Family Practice.After 20 years of private practice in the Midwest and Arizona, Dr. Winston currently serves as Chief Operating Officer of GeroSolutions, a company that develops, markets, and presents multimedia training programs for health care professionals on topics in geriatric medicine and psychiatry, focusing on the long-term care environment.

Description:

This program provides current information regarding safe and effective bowel preparation for colonoscopy and other bowel procedures. The intended audience is pharmacists, and the primary focus is on raising awareness of appropriate patient selection and use of bowel preparation products. The importance of proper dosage and hydration to ensure patient safety and compliance will be highlighted in the presentation. 

Goals and Objectives:

  1. Discuss contraindications and precautions necessary for proper patient screening/selection for colonoscopy.
  2. Describe how PEG lavage and Sodium Phosphate (NaP) preparations vary in their physiological mechanisms of action.
  3. Describe various types colonoscopic procedures and bowel preparation agents.
  4. Discuss optimal dosing regimes for various bowel preparation agents.
  5. Counsel patients regarding the importance of proper hydration and possibly side effects associated with bowel preparation (for colonoscopy).
  6. Discuss how the pharmacist and physician can work together to select an optimal bowel preparation agent (and dosing schedule) based upon the patient's medical history and physical condition.
