Program Description This CE monograph will provide
critical information to assist community pharmacists in understanding
e-prescribing processes and standards, as well as better prepare
community pharmacists to integrate e-prescribing into their workflow.
Faculty
Ken Whittemore, Jr., RPh, MBA Ken
is Vice President of Professional and Regulatory Affairs for
SureScripts. SureScripts was founded by the National Community
Pharmacists Association and the National Association of Chain Drug
Stores to encourage and promote true electronic prescribing
connectivity between physicians and pharmacists.
Prior to
joining SureScripts, Ken was President and CEO of CARE Pharmacies,
Inc., an independent community pharmacy franchise in the Washington, DC
area. While with CARE, he was responsible for supervising the
transformation of the organization from that of a group purchasing
cooperative to that of a full-service franchise.
During the
decade prior to his CARE tenure, Ken was Vice President for Management,
Professional, and State affairs for the National Community Pharmacists
Association. In this role, he was responsible for monitoring and
formulating strategies for dealing with a wide variety of managed care,
regulatory, and operational issues that confronted NCPA's independent
pharmacy members. He also acted as NCPA's liaison to all state,
regional, and national pharmacy groups.
From 1980 through 1992,
Ken was a principal in a successful independent pharmacy in Western
Maryland. He is a 1976 graduate of the University of Maryland
School of Pharmacy, and is licensed to practice pharmacy in both
Maryland and Pennsylvania. He also has practiced in hospital
pharmacy settings, and holds an MBA degree that was awarded to him by
Mount Saint Mary's College in 1990.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants will be better able to:
- Define what is meant by true electronic prescribing connectivity.
- List three potential benefits of electronic prescribing connectivity to patients, pharmacists and physicians.
- Identify three obstacles that have prevented the widespread
adoption of electronic prescribing to date, and describe the ways these
obstacles are now being overcome.
- Discuss the impact that the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003 and
other national initiatives will have on the adoption of electronic
prescribing connectivity.
- Explain how the electronic prescribing infrastructure will likely
be used to provide enhanced patient care services in the future.
Target Audience This program is appropriate for pharmacists in any practice setting.
